Artist Ramsay Crome returns home from the First World War, marries a farm girl, and tries to make a living as a commercial artist during the turbulent economic times. He is haunted, though, by memories of life in a prisoner-of-war camp as well as by thoughts of Margaret, the woman he left behind when he first went into battle.
